I’m gonna be that guy here... that’s not a tank, it’s a self propelled gun, i.e. mobile artillery.

and....also tank!

Pretty much what I thought. I'd like this unpleasantness to be over but I doubt it is.

I think its a reprieve, but I don’t think we’re sticking around long term. Either one day someone will make the decision to nuke it all, or, what I think is more like is that they’ll break everything up and sell off the pieces to the highest bidders.

Looks like an M109 Paladin howitzer.

I’m not as up-to-date on ground combat equipment as I used to be, so I’m just going to agree.

That’s an M109 howitzer , not a tank.

I don’t see anything on the changelog, and I don’t see any reason to trust a private equity firm not to do us dirty, but...we might be out of the weeds. Here’s what I got as a response from the Kinja help desk last night
:
“ The latest information I received is that user blogs/communities are staying alive. But I registered your questions and I will forward it to the product team, in case of a future action like what is not happening now, these will be very valuable to us, thank you!”

Good news!
Your not the only That Guy.
I obviously don’t know much about tanks or tracked cannons. But it was neat to see.

So what’s the difference?
Looked up tank:
2.
a heavy armored fighting vehicle carrying guns and moving on a continuous articulated metal track.

Tanks are used to fight other tanks, so they’re armored to take hits from other tank guns at short(er) range and carry direct fire guns. Armored guns are designed for indirect long range fire while protecting their crews from shrapnel NBC hazards .

Tanks are heavly armored designed to fight other tanks and support infantry directly in combat. Self propelled artillery is lightly armored and designed to fire at targets miles away (up to 20miles or so) and is not designed to be in direct combat.

Its all good. No worries!

Self Propelled Guns (SPGs) lack the heavy armor. I don’t have any specifics on that particular vehicle but the armor on is probably only sufficient to stop small arms rounds (i.e. bullets) and maybe some light weapons (early generation RPGs, etc.) It wouldn’t stand up to things like an armor piercing round from another SPG or tank, a heavy anti-tank missile launched from an aircraft or helicopter, etc.
Additionally the SPG’s gun fires large (~155 mm diameter) shells in a parabolic trajectory, meaning the ordnance falls on it’s target from above . A tank cannon is a direct fire weapon, meaning it shoots a smaller (~100 mm) , higher velocity round in more of a straight line.
A lot of it boils down to the way they are employed in combat. SPGs, like all artillery, are designed to be deployed back behind an army’s front lines and provide suppressing fire or directed fire support (i.e. there’s a building/bunker/whatever full of enemies, or enemies are advancing on our position, drop shells on them to destr o y them, slow or halt their progress, etc.). A tank is a front line combat vehicle designed to work with infantry to support fire and maneuver, and directly counter enemy tanks.

Speaking of the C hangelog, I noticed the other day that the warning had been posted there too. On one hand, it seems like an obvious “ customer service”-o riented place to post a remi nder for anyone who visits the C hangelog, but on the other hand the Changelog is probably tech ni cally j ust another “user page” that the team posts to, and would be part of the collateral damage if they tried to nuke everything that wasn’t part of the main blogs.
